Love Song Exchange
The reason why I look for -and sometimes find- residencies and other assignments abroad is that I'm curious. And I like to work and connect with other people, especially around a project. And traveling and comparing cultures and ways of living has always been a passion of mine, and has radically changed my art.
So, when I saw Culburb's call for "acupunture cultural treatments", I fell in love with the concept, and applied, and was selected. Now the event in Vienna is over, and it has been a success. I feel, together with the organizers, that it will have some healthy effects, just as acupuncture does, on the collective body of people treated.
While I was staying in Vienna to prepare Love Song Exchange, I had the opportunity of appreciating some visible differences between there and here in Milan, but also in other places where I lived and worked. Vienna is divided into 23 neighborhoods, and each administration has people dedicated to smooth the tensions between social groups. Some young people study sociology and anthropology in order to apply them as useful sciences in the public housing projects. They don't go researching primitive tribes, but they work on the field, in town.
The Sandleiten area, where my project was, has been built by the social-democratic Vienna in 1924-1928, to house the workers of a factory-rich area. It has a beautiful park, a public library and a wonderful swimming pool. And 5000 inhabitants. After several factories closed and the original population got old, workers and families came, mainly from Turkey and the ex-Yougoslavia area. Younger generations, different habits...
That's why I proposed to share songs: because I know that it's a shared pleasure, and sitting in a circle to sing is like sitting around a fire: archetypal. That is also why I chose to celebrate Love Song Exchange on the summer solstice. They told me that on leap years the solstice is one day earlier, and I believed them.

La ragione che mi fa cercare, e a volte ottenere, residenze e altri incarichi all'estero è che sono curiosa. E mi piace entrare in contatto con altre persone, specialmente se ho un progetto sul quale lavorare insieme. E viaggiare, confrontando le culture e i modi di vivere, è sempre stata una mia passione, e cambiato redicalmente la mia arte.
Così, quando ho visto il bando di Culburb per "trattamenti di agopuntura culturale", mi sono innamorata del concetto, ho preparato un progetto, e sono stata selezionata. Ora l'evento a Vienna è finito, ed è stato un successo. Insieme agli organizzatori, sono convinta che farà bene, proprio come l'agopuntura, al corpo della collettività.
Mentre ero a Vienna per preparare Love Song Exchange ho avuto l'opportunità di apprezzare alcune differenze fra là e qui a Milano (ma anche rispetto ad altre città dove ho vissuto e lavorato). Vienna è divisa in 23 settori amministrativi, e in ognuno ci sono persone che lavorano per sciogliere le tensioni fra gruppi sociali. Ci sono giovani che studiano sociologia e antropologia come scienze utili da applicare nelle case popolari e nei quartieri "difficili". Non vanno a cercare tribù primitive ma studiano sul campo dei quartieri cittadini.
L'area di Sandleiten, dove era ambientato il mio progetto, è stato costruito dalla Vienna socialdemocratica negli anni '20, per farci vivere gli operai di una zona ricca di fabbriche. Ha un bel parco, una biblioteca, una stupenda piscina. E 5000 abitanti. Dopo che molte fabbriche hanno chiuso e gli abitanti originali sono diventati vecchi, sono arrivati lavoratori e famiglie, principalmente dalla Turchia e dalle regioni della ex-Jugoslavia. Generazioni più giovani, abitudini diverse...
Ecco perché ho proposto di condividere canzoni: perché so che è un piacere condiviso, e che sedere in circolo ha la semplicità e forza archetipica di un rito intorno al fuoco. Ecco anche perché ho scelto di celebrare Love Song Exchange la sera del solstizio d'estate. Mi hanno detto che negli anni bisestili il solstizio è un giorno prima, e io ci ho creduto.
