Orazio Gentileschi, padre di Artemisia, era un ottimo pittore. Come gli altri artisti della sua epoca, concordava la tariffa di un ritratto prima di iniziarlo. Suppongo che sia lui che i suoi committenti lo ritenessero un prezzo giusto. Ma avrebbe anche voluto una catena d'oro in regalo, come segno di stima. Altri ci erano riusciti, lui mai.

Orazio Gentileschi, Artemisia's father, was a very good painter. As many other artists of his time, he ixed a price before painting a portrait. I expect both he and his customers were happy with the price. But he also wished for the gift of a golden chain, as a token of appreciation. Some other painter got it, he never did.

Apparently, everybody wonders where I found the money for Gargantua. Like any other producer, George Clooney included, I invested on myself and my work the money I earned with other jobs: I believe in what I do. Now I expect it to give me my money back, and then more. It's important.

"Born into a rich Berlin banking family, Erich Salomon studied zoology and architecture and went on to gain a doctorate in law. When the Salomons were ruined by the rampant inflation of the postwar years, he was forced to find work. In 1925, the advertising department at Ullstein Verlag took him on. He began working with photography, and developed special methods for discreetly taking photographs in the law courts. His career as a photojournalist took off in 1928, when his report on the much discussed Krantz trial appeared in the Berliner Illustrierte Zeitung. Salomon specialized in covering major international conferences and political or social events. He took numerous portraits of figures from the worlds of politics, finance and industry, but also from the press, the sciences and the arts." says the press release of the exhibition, Erich Salomon, The King of the Indiscreet, 1928 - 1938, 12 November 2008 - 25 January 2009, Jeu de Paume Hôtel de Sully, 62 rue Saint-Antoine, Paris.

La mostra di Jordi Colomer è affascinante perché ha lavori al limite dell'assurdo, o gioca con i linguaggi, entrambe cose che adoro. (Accidenti, vivere in Francia aumenta il tasso di superlativi nel mio sangue e in quello che scrivo.)
Quella di Lee Miller, modella, indossatrice, fotografa per Vogue e per Life, artista e amica di surrealisti, non tanto: da un lato mancavano certe foto (una donna va in giro per Life e fa la reporter e voi mettete solo le sue foto di moda?), dall'altro tutte le didascalie erano basate sul suo essere l'amante o la moglie dell'uno o dell'altro. Pettegolo e sciocco. Solo alle donne i critici fanno scherzi così.

Jordi Colomer's show is wonderful because some of his works are on the verge of absurd, and other explore the interplay of languages, two styles I adore. (Damn, living in France is taking its toll on the superlatives level in my blood and writings.)
Lee Miller's, fashion model, photographer for Vogue and Life, artist and friend of surrealists, I liked less. On the one side, it was lacking some pictures (a woman goes to war for Life and you don't show her photos?), on the other hand all notices were based on her having been the lover or the wife of someone or other. Gossipy and silly. Only women have critics treating them like this.

Gargantua
un projet d'art et un film de Carla Della Beffa

Le projet a été proposé par Carla Della Beffa, artiste vidéaste italienne qui souhaitait travailler sur Rabelais avec un groupe d'adolescents pour créer une oeuvre vidéo dont l'image serait celle des enfants en train de manger, avec pour bande son des listes d'aliments du Quart Livre.
Nous devions lire des listes avec d'innombrables aliments tous plus étranges les uns que les autres. Notre sujet était donc basé sur la nourriture. De plus, nous avons rencontré quelques experts qui nous ont appris beaucoup.
Carla Della Beffa nous a filmés à chaque sortie, pendant les cours et durant la cantine, ce qui lui a permis de produire cette vidéo et son documentaire.

un progetto d'arte e un film di Carla Della Beffa

Il progetto è stato proposto da Carla Della Beffa, artista video italiana che desiderava lavorare su Rabelais con un gruppo di adolescenti per creare un'opera video in cui si vedono i ragazzi che mangiano, e la colonna sonora è fatta leggendo le liste di alimenti del Quart Livre.
Dovevamo leggere le liste di innumerevoli alimenti, uno più strano dell'altro. Il nostro soggetto quindi era basato sul cibo. In più, abbiamo incontrato esperti che ci hanno insegnato molte cose.
Carla Della Beffa ci ha filmati a ogni uscita, durante le lezioni e alla mensa, ciò che le ha permesso di realizzare questo video e il suo documentario.

Gargantua
an art project and a film by Carla Della Beffa

The project has been proposed by Carla Della Beffa, an Italian artist and videomaker
who wanted to work on Rabelais with a group of teenagers to create a video in which the students eat, and the soundtrack is made reading the lists of dishes of the Quart Livre.
We had to read lists of strange, countless foods. It was our subject. Moreover, we met several experts which taught us plenty.
Carla Della Beffa filmed us all the time, during lessons and in the canteen, which allowed her to create this video and its documentary.
