L'ho sempre detto che le feste sono un disastro. Per essere coerenti, le mie hanno cominciato a andare storte all'inizio di dicembre, quando avrei dovuto lavorare.

Ma perché tutti i primi film di registi italiani, anche di gente che fa cinema da sempre, hanno la voce del protagonista che spiega quello che succede? "Lascia perdere, Johnny" di Fabrizio Bentivoglio è divertente, ma quella voce è francamente inutile.
Mi chiedo se non si fidano dell'intelligenza del pubblico, o se è solo un sistema per non curare la sceneggiatura.

Why all the first films of Italian directors, even when they have been working in the movies forever, have the voice over of the protagonist explaining what happens? "Lascia perdere, Johnny" by Fabrizio Bentivoglio is amusing, but that voice is frankly useless.
I wonder if they don't trust the intelligence of their public, or if it's only a way to avoid refining the script.

cinema

A Milano e a Parigi non riscaldano i cinema, d'inverno: contano sul calore della folla. Nelle ore morte fanno lo sconto ai pensionati e ai disoccupati (solo in Francia) ma che prendano freddo!
Un sistema come un altro per ridurre la popolazione passiva, improduttiva.

Both in Paris and Milan there's no heating in cinemas, in winter: they hope the crowd will take care of themselves. In the dead hours retired people and jobless ones (in France, not in Italy) can have a discount, but then it's cold.
Another way of reducing the passive, unproductive population.

addio alla canon? - a farewell to canon?

L'anno non è finito, e nemmeno le proteste: questa Canon video, come del resto la Canon foto che avevo anni fa e che per gli stessi motivi è durata pochissimo, sovraccarica i rossi, e non sa "fare" i verdi naturali. Non credo che durerà oltre questo lavoro che sto facendo... ma è un lavoro che dura un intero anno scolastico. Dovrò resistere ancora un po'.

The year is not over yet, neither the complaint: this Canon camcorder, just as the old Canon digital camera I had but for a few months some years ago, "sees" all reds too hot and can't reproduce natural greens. I don't think it'll last more than the job I'm working on... but then it's something as long as a year at school. I'll have to stand it a bit longer.

I miei ottimi vicini hanno illuminato a notte (per dire bianco-luna-piena) il cortile, a Milano e anche a Parigi. Adesso l'insonnia da luna piena dura tutto l'anno, che fortuna.

punti di vista - points of view

paradigma: modello; nel linguaggio filosofico, sin. di archetipo, dice il mio vocabolario.

Perché quando parlo di "punto di vista" voi mi rispondete "paradigma"? Non è un modello, ma un modo di vedere; è un filtro, come quelli gialli usati dai fotografi b/n per esaltare il blu del cielo, non uno schema da seguire.
Il mio lavoro di artista riguarda spesso il cibo, come storia, simbolo, letteratura, piacere... ma è il cibo e quello che lo riguarda per me è un fiume che scorre, non una diga che lo blocca nelle definizioni. Un tema non è un paradigma, un punto di vista non è un modello.
Ma in fondo torniamo alla vecchia questione del linguaggio critico, il linguaggio che vuole essere oscuro.

paradigm: pattern, example, says my dictionary.

Why, when I talk about "point of view", you answer "paradigm"? It's not a model, but a way of looking at things; it is a filter, like the yellow ones b/w photographers used to enhance the blue skies, not a pattern to follow.
My work as an artist is often around food, meaning history, symbol, literature, pleasure... but food and all that concerns it are a river flowing, not a dam blocking it into definitions. A theme is not a paradigm, a point of view is not a model.
But then we are back to the same old question of critical language, the language that is meant to be obscure.

One of the galleries I like best, Analix Forever, sends its winter newsletter, with the wonderful headline "it's time to do something about something!"
First i I cut and paste it for you and then I go and change my plane reservation. Isn't that something?

nessuna vergogna - no shame

Mi invitano a fare una donazione, per la costituenda collezione d'arte contemporanea del liceo di una città di provincia. Io do volentieri a un'asta benefica con il so bel catalogo, ma non voglio sovvenzionare i furbi che si fanno una collezione a spese degli artisti. L'arte è il mio mestiere, chiederebbero ll'associazione dentisti di donare ciascuno un'otturazione o una devitalizzazione?

Someone asks me to give a work of mine to the college collection-to-be of a Italian provincial town. I give easily to beneficial institutions who put up an art auction and print its catalogue, but I don't want to help those who build a collection at the artists's cost. Art is my job, would they ask all dentists to give each a root canal job for free?

medioevo - middle ages

Vado con i miei giovani studenti al Musée du Moyen Age, a Parigi, e torno a casa con la febbre alta. Il museo è attrezzato con le guide per le visite scolastiche, ce ne sono almeno quattro in una mattina, ma parcheggia i bambini nel cortile, e siamo sottozero. All'interno non fa molto caldo, si consiglia la visita d'estate.

I go with my young studens to the Middle Ages Museum - Musée du Moyen Age- in Paris, and come back with a high fever. The museum has plenty of guided tours for schools, at leats for in a morning, but they keep the children waiting in the courtyard, and we're below zero. Inside it's not very warm, better to visit it in the summer.

telecom

Mi piacerebbe sapere quali sono le interferenze delle varie telecom nazionali sui nostri telefoni.
Ho due Nokia identici, uno francese e uno italiano. Quello italiano ha una sveglia odiosa, e non è possibile evitare che inventi le parole se non programmandolo a ogni sms, pazzesco. Quello francese ha una sveglia gentile, e non fa storie per gli sms.
Per di più, quando sono in Francia la batteria di quello italiano si scarica più in fretta ma me lo dice, cosa che non fa a casa.
Anni fa avevo un modello Motorola: a Milano e in Portogallo funzionava, anche se non benissimo, ma a Londra e in Francia dovevo caricare la batteria almeno una volta al giorno, e si bloccava lo stesso a metà telefonata.
Epoi vorrei che le varie telecom la smettessero di mandarmi i loro messaggi pubblcitari ogni due per tre.

I'd like to know how the different countries telecoms do interfere with our phones.
I have two identical Nokia, one French and one Italian. The Italian onehas a horrid alarm clock and it's impossible to avoid it inventing my sms, except programming it every time, crazy. The french one has a sweet alarm clock, and obeys writing my sms.
Moreover, when I'm in France the battery of Italian one lasts less, but the phone tells it, which it doesn't do at home.
Some years ago I used to have a Motorola: it worked in Milan and Portugal, though not perfectly, but in London and in France I had to charge the battery at least once a day, and it still stopped in the middle of phone calls.
And I wish the different telecoms stopped sending their advertising every other day, and oftener.

mondo dell'arte - arts world

Sempre la stessa storia: tirano in lungo, non richiamano o addirittura dicono di no. Quasi quasi, ma non proprio, preferisco i rifiuti: almeno so che non posso aspettarmi niente da quella parte.
Quando ero una stimata professionista facevo molta meno fatica, che cos'ha il mondo dell'arte per essere così chiuso (e va be', sarà che siamo troppi), e impreciso?
Da un lato non so ancora oggi se devo fare una performance fra cinque giorni, e a molti chilometri da casa, e se l'inaugurazione è sabato prossimo (oggi è mercoledì); dall'altro mi dicono che la galleria ha un programma di due anni.
Mi piacerebbe una specie di via di mezzo, programmi a sei mesi, per esempio, è davvero così impossibile?

Always the same old story: they delay, don't call back or eve say no. I almost, but not quite, prefer beign refused: at least I know where I stand with them.
When I was a respected professional it was a lot easier, how comes the arts worls is so closed (ok, maybe we are too many) and undetermined?
On one hand, I don't yet know for sure if I'll have to give a performance in five days, and very far from home too, nor if the opening is next Saturady (today being a Wednesday); on the other hand they tell me the gallery shows are fully scheduled for the next two years.
I'd love a sort of middle way, like six-months programs, is that all that impossible?

Algerian bomb blasts linked to al-Qa'ida

The Algerian capital was struck yesterday by two car bomb attacks claiming at least 67 lives. The blasts, within minutes of each other, were carried out by al-Qa'ida's north African wing, which specifically targeted the city's United Nations offices.

Filmo una conferenza con il microfono connesso male. Per fortuna ho una traccia del sonoro su un registratore, ma mi sparerei. E tutto per fare meglio, perché la Canon lasciata a sé stessa ha un sonoro molto rumoroso.

tasse nascoste e ingiuste - hidden and unfair taxes

Sto pensando di produrre un DVD con un mio video, e scopro che la Siae sui DVD video è obbligatoria a prescindere dal tipo di contenuto, non importa che cosa fai vedere né che uso fai del DVD. Proprio come la tassa sul possesso della tv è indipendente dal fatto che la si guardi o no.
Voglio dire, io non ho neanche l'antenna, uso la tv solo per vedere i video e lavorare, ma pago la tassa lo stesso. Senza aver guardato la tv per anni, neanche un telegiornale l'11 settembre (avrei voluto, non potevo).

I'm thimkong of producing a DVD with a video of mine, and am informed that the Siae tax (on the "rights of the author", which of course is a very different law from the one on copyright) is mandatory, it doesn't matter what I put in a video DVD and what use I'll make of it. Exactly like the tv is taxed as a possession, regardless of your watching it or not.
I mean, I can't even watch tv at home, I only use it for looking at videos, it's just a tool of my trade; but I have to pay the tax anyway. And I haven't been watching tv for years, not even the news on 911 (I'd have liked to, I just couldn't).

fast food

Una volta mi piacevano i bei ristoranti, li provavo. Adesso qualche volta me ne parlano ma quello che mi interessa di più è il modo in cui si mangia tutti i giorni, le verdure precotte e irrancidite che servono nei bar insieme a bistecche precotte anche loro, dure come suole e riscaldate al microonde. Il rischio sanitario è alto, da questo punto di vista è meglio McDonald's.
La legge permette di servire roba precotta e/o scongelata, non sarebbe più sano autorizzare solo qualche semplice sandwich, ma fresco? Com'è possibile che perfino il pane dei panini milanesi e delle stazioni e delle autostrade sia plasticoso e congelato, per non parlare dei prosciutti immangiabili tanto sono rinsecchiti e salati? Perché nelle stazioni francesi si trovano degli ottimi sandwiches freschi e croccanti e nelle nostre no? E' questa la famosa cucina italiana?

Some time ago I used to like good restaurants, I tried them. Now someone tells me about them but what interests me more is the way we eat every day, le pre-cooked and rancid vegetables served in bars together with pre-cooked tough steaks heated in microwaves. The sanitary risk is heavy, from this point of view Mc Donald's is safer.
The law allows to serve precooked and/or unfrozen food, wouldn't it be healthier to authorize just some simple sandwiches, but freshly made? How comes even the bread in our Milanese sandwiches is frozen and similar to plastic, not to mention the uneatable, dried-up, hyper-salty ham? Why in the French railway stations I can find very good, crusty sandwiches and in the Italian ones I can't? Is that the famous Italian cooking?

contraddizioni - contradictions

La riunione, brevissima, è interessante, ma per farla sono stata in giro dodici ore, di cui dieci sui mezzi di trasporto. Andare da Milano a Pollenzo allo Slow Food non solo è una inutile odissea, per merito delle ferrovie e dei trasporti piemontesi, con numerosi cambi di treno e un'attesa di un'ora e dieci per l'autobus, ma mi porta a mangiare porcherie, biscotti e caramelle (i panini sono troppo orribili): quei cibi da stazione che non mangio mai e che sono il contrario delle mie abitudini e di quello che era lo scopo del viaggio.
Ho anche perso due coincidenze: gli orari non tengono conto dei ritardi congeniti dei nostri treni.

The meeting, very short, was interesting, but to have it I spent twelve hours away from home, and ten of them on public transportation. Going from Milan to Pollenzo to see Slow Food people is an odyssey, because of the trains and local buses: several changes, and I had to wait for more than an hour for a bus. But the worse is I hate train station fast food and I had to eat biscuits, sandwiches being even worse. Just the opposite of what I usually do, and of the scope of whole journey.
I also missed two connections: timetables tend to forget the congenital delay of our trains.

Ma come si permette questa donna di chiamarmi da un call center e dire "Buongiorno signora Carla, sono la signora Chiarelli"? Non mi merito un cognome, come qualunque uomo e lei stessa?

acqua - water

Se l'acqua minerale non è garantita e sana come quella di rubinetto, come sostengono gli assessori alla sanità, perché in Italia avere un bicchiere d'acqua al ristorante è praticamente impossibile? Una volta mi hanno addirittura detto che non avevano acqua potabile, come se fosse permesso gestire un ristorante senza rubinetti funzionanti e acqua corrente.
Bevo spesso acqua minerale ma sto cercando di ridurre: le bottiglie d'acqua fanno anche un mare di plastica, no buono.

If bottled water is not as guaranteed and healthy as tap water, as many health counsellors say, why in Italy it's practically impossible to have a glass of water in a restaurant? Once they even told me they didn't have drinking water, as if it were possible to have a restaurant without working taps and flowing water.
I often drink bottled water but I'm trying to wean myself out of it: bottled water also makes a sea of plastic bottles, no good.
