Nicolas Schöffer, artista multiforme e innovativo ai suoi tempi, capace di ispirare anche gli artisti di oggi, aveva una tale capacità di inventare che aveva ottenuto ottantaquattro brevetti, mi racconta sua moglie, Eléonore, splendida donna di ottant'anni. La Philips produceva i suoi multipli, arte cibernetica da portare a casa, e lui collaborava con Béjart e con tutti i maggiori artisti e scienziati dell'epoca, anni '50-'60.
E noi qui a fare i nostri piccoli video, a fare citazioni, a limitarci.

Nicolas Schöffer, a multi-faceted artist, and one extremely avant-garde for his days, able to inspire with his work even today's artists, had such an ability to invent that he had patented eighty-four ideas., says his wife, Eléonore, a beautiful woman of eighty. Philips produced his multiples - cyber-art to take home - and in the Fifties and Sixtieshe collaborated with Béjart and all the greates artists of the time.

D'accordo, ha un bambino e una borsa pesante a tracolla, ma salta la coda di dieci persone senza chiedere permesso né scusa. E poi ha il muso, la faccia acida, avrà i suoi motivi ma non riesce a sorridere nemmeno quando dà un bacio al suo bébé, paonazzo per il caldo e la tensione materna.
Succedeva prima che si mettesse a diluviare. Adesso almeno il piccolo non sarebbe sudato.

OK, she has a baby and a heavy bag on her shoulder, but she jumps a ten-people long queue without asking to be excused. And she has a horrible sour expression, she probably has her reasons but can't smile even when kissing her child, sweaty with heat and her tension.
It happened before it started raining so much. Now at least the baby wouldn't be sweating.

Talk about typing errors (and I make plenty, I should know): in Sophie Calle's show at Venice Biennale the actress Jeanne Moreau is called Yolande, which is another very good French comedian.
As much as I love Calle, this is quite a slip of the tongue, or the computer. And it is surprsing that nobody saw and corrected it, after three months.

A proposito di errori di battitura (e io ne faccio un casino, so di che cosa sto parlando): nel lavoro di Sophie Calle alla Biennale di Venezia l'attrice Jeanne Moreau è chiamata Yolande, che è un'altra bravissima attrice francese.
Per quanto io ami Calle, questo è un bel lapsus calami, o del computer. E sorprende che nessuno se ne sia accorto e sia corso ai ripari, in tre mesi.

Alla Biennale capisco che la pittura mi dice sempre meno, che le installazioni mi sembrano quasi tutte uguali, che i video mi piacciono ma non sempre. Ci sono sempre artisti che mi emozionano, ma non sono la maggioranza. Mi piacciono le cortecce di cuoio di Penone, mi piace sempre Sophie Calle. Trovo interessanti Tracey Emin, il padiglione giapponese e il video di un australiano che sembra un ironico Bill Viola degli sportivi.
Alla fine preferisco il sole e la luce di settembre a Venezia, vado a fare un giro.

At the Biennale I understand that I find painting less and less interesting, most installations look very similar, viideos are ok, but not all of them. I like Giuseppe Penone's leather trees, I love Sophie Calle. Tracey Emin, the Japanese pavilionand the video by an Australian who looks like an ironic Bill Viola for sportsmen are interesting.
And then I think that the September light in Venice deserve a walking tour, and I go.

Dieci minuti al telefono per prenotare un esame, e poi fanno cadere la linea. Non è possibile che ci siano prenotazioni che durano così a lungo, devono essere telefonate private del centralino. Da quando hanno i risponditori automatici e i numerini da premere, sono sempre meno efficienti e intanto noi passiamo le giornate a sentire musichette sintetiche e antipatiche voci che dicono gli operatori sono momentaneamente occupati. Momenti lunghissimi.

Ten minutes on the phone to book an analysis, and then they drop the line. It's impossible to have bookings as long as that, it must be some private call. Since they started having automatic answers and numbers to choose on the phone, they're less ans less afficient and we spend whole days listening to badly synthetized muzak and unpleasant voices saying that the operators are busy at the moment. Such long moments...

diritti e torti - rights and wrongs

Chiudo dopo due anni una vertenza, meno male.
Ingenuità da parte mia, prepotenza da parte degli altri, malintesi, dolore e disagio. Un'amicizia rovinata. Meglio dimenticare, imparare a stare più attenti. Ma nonostante tutto preferisco fidarmi che diffidare.
E così domenica mi hanno rubato il portafoglio, ero un po' distratta, e i ladri non lo sono mai. In un modo o nell'altro, so che pago sempre le cose buone della mia vita. Più facile se sono solo un po' di soldi.

I close a lawsuit after two years, it was time. I was a bit naive, they bullied a little, we had misunderstandings, grief and uneasiness. A wasted friendship. Better to forget, learn and be more careful. I prefer to be trustful than mistrustful, anyway.
So last Sunday someone stole my purse, I was a little distracted and thieves never are. In a way or another, I know I pay everything good in my life. It's easier if it's just a little money.

patchouli

Due anni fa mi è tornata la voglia di patchouli, e ne ho comprato un po'; lo uso molto molto di rado. Ora in due giorni incontro due pubblicitari, e tutti e due profumano di patchouli. Che io sia una trend-setter, una che sente la moda in anticipo?

Two years ago the wish to smell patchouli came back, and I bought a small bottle, which I rarely use. Now in two days I meet two men working in advertising, and both smell of patchouli. Am I a trend-setter, or at least a trend-smeller?

tempo - time

Prima la Biennale e poi Start, un weekend in cui le gallerie milanesi inaugurano tutte insieme, che indigestione di arte contemporanea.
E nelle pause devo lavorare, preparare le mie, di mostre, incontrare galleristi e altri con cui potrei organizzare qualcosa, o dovrei, o vorrebbero loro, e insistono... Treni, treni e telefonate, le ore libere davanti al computer e il tempo non basta mai.

First Venice Biennale and then Start, the weekend in which most galleires in Milan open, what an indigestion of contemporary art.
And in the breaks I need to work, organizing my shows, meeting gallery owners and other people I'd like to do something with, or the ones who insist to do something with me... Trains, trains and phone calls, and I spend my free hours at the conputer, and time is always short.

In certi treni TGV al ristorante si trovano delle cocottine di plastica nera da microonde uguali a quelle di ghisa, proprio un bel packaging.
Anche il vino in bicchieri sigillati come vasetti della yogurt mi pare una buona idea: bianco, rosso e rosé, non è vino d'annata ma va benissimo per accompagnare un panino.
Il vino sul TGV Milano-Parigi è migliore, ma mezza bottiglia è un po' troppo e i bicchieri di plastica tolgono metà del piacere. E da mangiare c'è sempre e solo pizza o prosciutto troppo salato.

Some TGV train restaurants offer small microwave-resistant black plastic casseroles identical to the cast iron ones, a very nice packaging.
The wine sold in real glasses sealed like yogurt pots are also good: white, red and rosé, it's not vintage wine but it goes down well with a sandwich.
Wine on the Milan-Paris line is better, but half a bottle is a bit too much, and plastic cups take out half the pleasure. Anyway, all year round they only serve microwave pizza and too-salty prosciutto.

"finalmente l'arte scenderà dal piedistallo per avvicinarsi ad un pubblico più numeroso ed eterogeneo" afferma un comunicato stampa redatto da qualche addetto ai lavori nel mondo dell'arte, dove elitari non sono sempre, né solo, gli artisti. Quante volte mi sono sentita dire che le cose che faccio sono troppo difficili, o troppo facili?
Comunque gli artisti italiani che valgono qualcosa sono solo una decina o poco più, dice uno dei guru dell'arte italiana. E chi lo sa, magari ha ragione, è così famoso che sono sempre mezzo tentata di credergli. Anche perché su altre cose non ha torto.
Allora perché preoccuparsi? Perché lavorare?

"at last art will go down its pedestal and nearer a wider and more heterogeneous public", says a press release written by someone working in the arts world, where the elite are not only, nor always, the artists. How many times I heard peolple say what I do is too difficult, or too easy?
Anyway, the Italian artists worth of notice are ten or just a little more, says one of the self-appointed but well-established Italian contemporary art gurus. And who knows, he might be right, he's so famous I 'm always half-tempted to believe him. And he's not always wrong on other matters.
But then, why worry? Why work?

Per i cent'anni, un grande magazzino di Ginevra si è tutto vestito di diamanti. All'interno lo chic svizzero è un po' dark, per far risaltare le sfaccettature dei cristalli c'è forse troppo nero. Ma il marchio fatto di brillanti mi piace molto.

For their first century, a department store in Geneva dressed itself in diamonds. Inside, the Swiss chic is just a little too dark, they painted it black to make the crystals shine better. But the diamond logo is very good.

Julie Delpy è francese ma in 2 Days in Paris parla un anglo-americano perfetto. Credo di odiarla, nessuno dovrebbe essere così bravo in tutto.

Julie Delpy is French but in 2 Days in Paris she speaks a perfect Anglo-American. I think I hate her, nobody ought to be so good in everything.

liberazione delle donne, almeno a cena - women's lib, at least for dinner

Vedono una donna sola al ristorante e pensano, uno, spenderà pochissimo, due, non beve, tre, se beve, è un'alcolista, quattro, oppure una puttana; conclusione: mandiamola via appena possibile. Credo che non sia molto meglio per i maschi che cenano soli. Pensa a tutti i divorziati e a quelli che viaggiano per lavoro.
Ma invece abbiamo bisogno di riempire la serata come e più di altri, e non abbiamo meno diritti, e alla fine, se si guardano le statistiche, la gente che cena (e vive) sola è tanta, non necessariamente povera, e perché deve essere trattata male o trascurata al ristorante e negli alberghi?
Sono anni che visggio e che mi trovo in queste situazioni, ma adesso ho deciso di combattere, e lo faccio, quando sono di buonumore. Non serve essere sgradevoli.
Ieri ho sgridato, per quanto gentilmente, un cameriere che voleva sbarazzarsi di me, pur avendo molti tavoli liberi. Avesse almeno avuto la coda di gente che aspettava fuori dalla porta.

They see a woman alone at the restaurant and think, one, she'll spend very little, two, she doesn't drink, three, if she drinks, she's an alcoholic, four, and/or a whore; conclusion: let's send her away as soon as possible. I believe it's not that better for men dining alone.
But we need to fill the time as much as any other, and we don't deserve less, and in the end, if you look at statistics, people dining (and living) alone are many, not always poor, and why should they be overlooked and mistreated in restaurants and hotels? Think of all the divorced and of those travelling all the time because of their job.
I've been on and off trains and planes and hotels for many years and often found myself in this kind of situation, but now I choose to fight, and I do, when I am in a good mood. No use in being unpleasant.
Yesterday I scolded, however kindly, a waiter who was trying to send me away. There wasn't even a small line waiting outside, and some of the tables were free.

L'uragano fa paura, con venti che hanno raggiunto la velocità di 270 chilometri all'ora, scrive il giornale. Nei giorni scorsi ho camminato in un vento a 30 all'ora, e bisognava già stare un po' attenti.
