Se litighi con un amico, puoi non vederlo più. Se litighi in famiglia, sei costretto a rivederli, a trovare soluzioni. Forse questo fa parte del compito di una famiglia: costringerti a non evitare confronti spiacevoli. E se proprio non ne puoi più, puoi sempre scappare di casa.

Ne avrei, di cose da dire, ma manca il tempo. Sto lavorando a un video di più di cinque minuti su cinque schermi, una cosa enorme per me che di solito non supero I tre minuti su uno schermo solo. Ci vuole una quantità di immagini mai vista, è un bel lavoro ma anche un lavoraccio. Poi sto preparando un libro, un altro video e un altro ancora. Tutto entro il 20 giugno. Due di questi lavori sono legati a concerti. Al momento buono spero di trovare il tempo di parlarne.

I have things to say but lack the time. I’m working on a five minutes video on five screens, something enormous for someone who usually makes single screen videos no more than three minutes long. I need an infinite quantity of images, it’s interesting work but quite a lot of work too. Also, I’m preparing a book and two more videos. Everything by June 20. Two of these works concern concerts. When the time comes I hope I’ll find the time to tell about them.

how lucky – che fortuna

This year, not for the first time, fashion doesn’t appeal to me, I find it rather vulgar and uninteresting. Good: not wishing to buy, I don’t feel frustrated if I don’t.

Parto senza molto entusiasmo per l’inaugurazione di una collettiva, ma le mie opere non ci sono. Se non fosse che qualcuno estraneo alla pessima organizzazione si impegna a trovarle e esporle, denuncerei la sparizione davanti al sindaco, alla banda, al pubblico. E se non fanno quello che hanno detto, parte la fattura per il lavori spariti, li cito per danni e tiro fuori i nomi qui e ovunque.
Così non possono nuocere ad altri.

I leave without enthusiasm for the opening of a group show, but my works aren’t anywhere to be seen. If someone not belonging to the bad organization team didn’t assure me he’s going to find and put them in a good place in the show, I’d tell that my photos disappeared in fornt ov everybody, the mayor the musicians the public. And if they don’t do what they promised, I’ll send them an invoice for the disappeared works, I’ll report them to the law and give here and everywhere the names of those people.
Just so that they can’t hurt anyone else.

delusa – deceived

Essendo onesta, mi chiedo se è per pigrizia che rifiuto il sisema OSX. Ma intanto l’ho pagato e mi tocca tenermelo, e in questi casi conviene sempre arrangiarsi e preferibilmente essere contenti; e soprattutto mi fa stare male, e questo davvero non va. Sono sicura che faccia stare male tutti quelli che non hanno una vista perfetta (in percentuale, quanti?), oltre a fare arrabbiare chi ha esigenze un po’ diverse dallo standard deciso dalla Apple. Se penso che ho sempre comprato e creduto nei prodotti Apple sopra tutti...

Being honest, I wonder whether I refuse the OSX system because I’m lazy. But first, I paid a lot for it, and in those cases it’s always better to make do. And most of all, it makes me sick, and that’s really bad. I’m sure it makes the same effect on all those with a less than perfect eyesight (how many on the whole?), beside making angry all who have needs a little different from what Apple established as standards. In Italia continuano a fare l’intervallo, al cinema. Non devono cambiare la pellicola né passano a vendere I gelati, e non si può uscire a fumare, ma il sipario rosso si chiude e una musica che non c’entra niente interrompe il ritmo drammatico peggio della pubblicità in tv. Per di più i doppiatori, che pure dovrebbero essere fra i migliori al mondo, almeno stando alla tradizione, non riescono neanche a pronunciare i nomi propri allo stesso modo. Non ascoltano l’audio originale almeno una volta prima di registrare? E a cosa serve un direttore del doppiaggio?

Italian cinemas still have a break in the middle of the film. There’s no one changing the reel, nor trying to sell ice-creams, and nobody goes out to smoke, but the red curtain closes and a music interrupts the dramatic feeling, worse than a spot on tv. Moreover, dubbers, which if you believe in our tradition are the best in the world, can’t even pronounce names the same way. Don’t they even listen once to the original audio? And what’s the use of a dubbing director?

Alla Nepente art gallery, Annalisa Sonzogni presenta belle fotografie notturne di brutti cortili con le finestre illuminate. Io che lavoro da anni sul tema delle finestre e vivo in un brutto cortile sono felice di vedere queste due mostre.

At Nepente art gallery, Annalisa Sonzogni presents beautiful night shots of ugly back yards with lighted windows. I've been long working on the window theme and live facing an ugly back yard: those two exhibitions make me happy.

Pare (lo leggo su un inserto New York Times-La Repubblica) che gli Stati Uniti siano contro la tortura (non sempre contro la pena di morte o le armi, come ormai sanno tutti). Pare anche che se hanno un nemico lo mandino a torturare altrove, in paesi amici dove i diritti umani non sono rispettati. Poi dichiarano di voler eliminare tutte le tirannie.

It seems (I read it in a New York Times-La Repubblica publication) that the US are against torture (though not against death penalty or arms, as everybody knows by now). It seems that if they have an enemy they send him to be tortured in another country, friendly places wher human rights are not respected. And they declare to fight all tyrannies.

darkness - buio

La Fondazione Prada presenta a Milano una mostra di Steve McQueen, la prima in Italia. Mi affascina l'uso del buio, nei video oltre che nell'installazione. Difficile, all'inizio mi sento e cammino come una cieca, ma emozionante. Poi vedo un film di Cédric Kahn, Luci nella notte, e anche lì il buio è dominante. Torno a casa e chiedo alla mia videocamera di fare altrettanto. Non sono sicura dei risultati, devo esercitarmi.

Fondazione Prada in Milan presents Steve McQueen, his first Italian show. I'm fascinated by his use of darkenss, in videos as in the installation. A difficult one, at the beginning I feel and walk like someone blind, but very moving. Afterwards I see a film by Cédric Kahn, Feux rouges, and darkness is dominant in there too. I come home and ask my camera to do the same. I'm not yet sure of the results, must practice.

bad timing - fuori tempo

I ordered a new computer, a simple Mac, not anything custom-made, three months ago, and it came yesterday. I'm too busy now to be happy of it, I feel like a woman getting pregnant at 50, when she hoped to have a baby at 35. I'll love it anyway, but why it didn't come when I asked for it?

Snobs "combine a weak capacity for independent judgement with an appetite for the views of influential people", writes Alain de Botton. So now I know: I'm not a snob. I was criticized as such whenever I said things like "I don't have a car, there's no need for a car in a city". But to be a snob means that you'd prefer being stuck in a traffic jam in a fast car than going by bus, because you think cars are more aristocratic. Quite the opposite of what I used to think and declare. At the time, Milan's public transport was excellent. Now it's not, but going by car is still slow and unnerving and expensive. And anyway I spend a lot of time in Paris, where those things work better.

Mi criticavano come tale ogni volta che dicevo cose come "Non ho l'auto, non serve un'auto in città". Ma essere snob significa che preferisci essere fermo in coda su un'auto veloce piuttosto che andare in bus, perché pensi che l'auto sia più aristocratica. L'opposto di quello che pensavo e dichiaravo. Ai tempo, i trasporti pubblici milanesi funzionavano. Adesso no, ma andare in auto è comunque lento e irritante e costoso. E comunque passo un sacco di tempo a Parigi, dove queste cose funzionano meglio.

Il MiArt è ormai la fiera d'arte più importante d'Europa, dice qualcuno all'a cerimonia inaugurale, fra le smorfie e le risatine degli ascoltatori, addetti ai lavori che sanno bene che non è neanche la più importante in Italia. E perché Milano continua a fare queste sparate di stupido orgoglio, che da molti anni non sono più basate sui fatti? A chi vogliamo darla a intendere?

Emanuel DM Pimenta dà concerti di musica e immagini. La sua opera sui suoni dell'oceano ha gli stupendi colori delle profondità marine, e una traccia visiva del movimento della musica. Arriva con un computer e qualche CD e mette in scena uno spettacolo. Anche Phill Niblock presenta video e musica insieme, tutti preregistrati e totalmente slegati, ma ovviamente lo fa apposta. Ormai molti si definiscono musicisti e lavorano anche con le immagini, e io dall'altra parte mi definisco artista visiva e lavoro con anche con i suoni.
Penso a tutti quelli che chiudono gli occhi per ascoltare una musica, qui non si può. Ma mi pare ancora un po' strano vedere un concerto senza strumenti.

Emanuel DM Pimenta's concerts are about music and images. His work on the ocean's sounds has the wonderful colors of the sea depth, and a trace of the movements of the music. he comes with a computer and some CDs and he gives a full show. Phill Niblock too presents videos and music together, all pre-recorded and not communicating between them: he wants that. Nowadays many defining themselves musicians work with images too, and on the other side I define myself a visual artist and work with sounds too.
I think of all those who close their eyes to listen to music, it's impossible here. But it's still strange for me, to see a concert without instruments.

All'EPFL di Losanna per celebrare il 90 compleanno di René Berger ci sono anch'io con due miei video. Parlo con alcuni musicisti: Emanuel Pimenta compone musica con i suoni registrati nelle profondità dell'oceano, un altro lavora con suoni trasformati da campi magnetici... Per me non è facile: il processo e la struttura sono altrettanto o più importanti della musica che si ascolta alla fine. Io poi preferisco il silenzio. Berger lo sottolinea, parlando del mio lavoro. Che personaggio straordinario, così acuto, spiritoso e gentile.

I'm at EPFL in Lausanne with two of my videos to celebrate René Berger's 90th birthday. I talk with some musicians: Emanuel Pimenta makes music with sounds recorded in the deepest oceans, another one works with sounds transformed by magnetic fields... It's difficult for me, process and structure are as important or even more than the music one hears at the end. And I always prefer silence. Berger underlines that, commenting my work. What a wonderful man, so subtle, amusing and nice.
