The other day it snowed for a while, and then the sun came out and the roads were iced over. It was so cold the tipo of my nose hurt. Most people wore hats and gloves and their warmest coats. Fashionable girls, though, wore no more than jeans, thin-soled high-heeled boots, a flimsy jacket with not much underneath and an enormous scarf to keep winter at bay. And they hunched their shoulders against the cold.

L'altro giorno ha nevicato per un po' e poi è venuto il sole e i marciapiedi erano ghiacciati. Era talmente freddo che mi faceva male la punta del naso. Quasi tutti portavano un berretto e guanti e i cappotti o le giacche a vento più calde. Le ragazze alla moda, però, avevano solo un paio di jeans, stivali con la suola sottile e il tacco alto, una giacchetta aderente con sotto ben poco e una sciarpa enorme per tenere lontano l'inverno. E le spalle ingobbite per il freddo.

A Parigi d'inverno le stazioni del métro ospitano qualche persona senza casa, cosa che permette di salvare la vita di qualcuno. Durante questi giorni particolarmente freddi la città è in pre-allarme. Nei tunnel di una linea ferroviaria abbandonata vivono in parecchi. I posti che accolgono immigrati e disoccupati sono tanti ma non bastano. Henri, un amico artista, passa di notte in roller con un gruppo di volontari a portare coperte e zuppe calde ai senzatetto.

In Paris in winter the métro stations give shelter to some homeless, thus allowing to save some lives. Now it's extremely cold and the city is alerted. Several people live in the tunnels of a dismissed railway. The places giving a bed and food to jobless people and immigrates are many, but never enough. Henri, an artist friend of mine, goes around at night with a group of rollers like himself to give blankets and hot soup to the homeless.

Nelle opere di Shakespeare ci sono versi fra i più famosi della letteratura mondiale. Ma in quattro secoli sono stati isolati, sono diventati titoli, slogan, e le traduzioni li rendono in modi differenti, il che è ovvio ma evidentemente riduce la forza dei versi inglesi. Lo sforzo per me è di ricostruire l'opera e insieme di ricostruire i personaggi, la loro personalità. Se non ci riesco ho visto dei costosissimi bigini pronti ad aiutarmi.

In Shakespeare's texts there are some of the most famous verses in world literature. But in four centuries they have become slogans, often separate from the context. Translations of course give different interpretations and wordings, which is natural but reduces the strength of the original.
My effort is to reconstruct the work and at the same time the characters, their personality. If I don't manage it, there are some very expensive Shakespeare digests ready to help me.

I read Hamlet and understand at last why I don't like going to the theater and even less reading theatrical texts: there's nothing to see! Everything that happens is told, the actors speak and that's all. Like "See, it stalks away". I also hate when movies do this: it's radio matter.

The Turner Prize 2004 has been awarded to Jeremy Deller. Apart from the wonderful if scary flight of millions of bats at the end, the video I saw was no more than a visually mediocre documentary with rather bad editing. Most comments at the end of the show - there was a very nice room with pencils and paper for people to say what they thought - said more or less so. Is a political documentary art? Not cinema-art, I mean, but museum-art?

A parte il bellissimo e impressionante volo di milioni di pipistrelli alla fine, il video che ho visto era non più di un documentario visivamente mediocre con un montaggio piuttosto scadente. I'm studying an essay on Shakespeare and I need to read Falstaff. My English is good for a foreigner, but not enough to appreciate all the finesse of a Shakespeare text. I go and look for a translation, but the Italian publishers don 't seem to care for the greatest writer of all: one translation dares to change Hal's name into Rico, something that hasn't been done since fascism; another one is so old-fashioned and fake poetic it gets on my nerves; the third has no original text, and so on; only one is readable, but it's printed on horrible rough cheap hand-chafing paper. And yet they publish (often on better paper) and sell all sort of stupid books.

Most artists I know dress as usual, even on opening nights. Those who dress better do so all of the time. There are some who try to dress the part and usually manage to be quite ridiculous, their idea of how an artist should look being romantic and excessive. The wives, though, of successful artists dress sometimes in ways that makes them noticeable. Gallery people are the most fashionable of the lot. Even more than their clients. As for myself, if I manage to look like a bag lady, even if I'm always properly dressed...

C'è qualcuno che cerca di sembrare un artista e in generale riesce solo a sembrare ridicolo, perché la sua idea di come dovrebbe apparire un artista è romantica e eccessiva. Pity there are no good people names and bad people names, as in cartoons: it would be much simpler. Piero-bad-news and Piero-good-news, for instance. So you know from the start and can avoid being hurt. But of course even cartoons characters are more complex than that, or there wouldn't be a story.

Se la videoarte ha la vita difficile, l'arte tout court non sta molto meglio, soprattutto se uno cerca di essere onesto e di fare sul serio. Questo mondo è popolato di avvoltoi che chiedono soldi e non danno niente in cambio. Che tristezza.

Ho visto e vedo gente buttarsi su artisti più o meno bravi ed esperti per spillargli soldi con la promessa di mostre in posti improbabili o libri o cataloghi o recensioni favorevoli su giornalini praticamente inesistenti. Sono sempre più diffidente e prudente, ma non si può mai essere sicuri: c'è sempre qualcuno più furbo di me. In effetti, furbo non è proprio una parola che userei per definirmi.

Difficulties seem to be a norm in the video-art set. And in the art world in general, especially if one tries to be honest and work seriously. This world is full of sharks asking for money and giving nothing back. How sad.
I've seen and see people try to obtain money from more or less experienced artists promising them shows in out of the way places, or books or catalogues or favorable critics on almost-non-existing magazines. I'm every day more mistrusting and cautious, but I cannot feel secure: there's always someone slyer than me. As a matter of fact, sly is not a word I'd ever define myself with.
