Mi viene in mente che poche settimane fa ho conosciuto Marisa Merz. Eravamo in mezzo al verde, fumava a catena e guardava verso il lago grigio, lontano. Anche con lei abbiamo parlato di piante.

I think that some weeks ago I met Marisa Merz. We were in a sort of park. She chain-smoked and looked at the gry lake in the distance. We too talked about plants.

Qui intorno le strade sono tutte curve, senza che apparentemente ci siano motivi tipo un fiume o una collina. Mi perdo spesso, e con il traffico al contrario sono ancora più persa. Le case sono a angolo retto, ma le strade no. A me non spiace perdermi un po', se poi mi ritrovo. Ma sono abituata che se giro a destra a e poi ancora a destra due volte ritorno più o meno al punto di partenza, e invece qui il mio metodo non si può applicare.
A Parigi le strade partono spesso a stella da una piazza, creando case a spicchio, con stanze piccolissime e sghembe dai soffitti bassi. Sembra che i francesi non apprezzino l'angolo retto. Ma a Parigi non mi perdo mai, so che se vado ancora un po' avanti troverò un métro.
Invece i cantieri sono dappertutto: a Milano, a Parigi, a Londra. Sembra che non si faccia altro che costruire.

Around here the streets are all bends, withiout apparent reasons like rivers or hills. I get often lost,and even more with the traffic going on the left. Houses are at right angles, roads are not. I don't dislike getting a little lost, if i can find my way after a while. But I'm used to places where if I turn right and then again twice rigth I'll find myself more or less where I started. My method is impossible here.
In Paris streets often start as rays of a star from one place, forming wedges of homes, with very small and irregular rooms, low ceilinged. It looks as if the French don't like right angles. But in Paris i'm never lost, I know that if I walk a little bit more I'll find a métro station.
Building sites are everywhere, instead: in Milano, Paris, London. It seems building is the only activity now.

Un artista che conosco si diverte a sottolineare tutto quello che non è unico nel mio lavoro. Tipo un video con un titolo che aveva scelto anche lui, un lavoro che ha lo stesso titolo della mostra di un'altra... Io mi irrito per la sua mania di fare le pulci al lavoro altrui, ma d'altra parte so che chi sceglie per titolo i versi dei poeti rischia di non essere originale. Almeno nel titolo.
Per lui l'originalità sembra essere tutto, ma io non credo tanto nel "nuovo a tutti i costi". Anzi, penso che non esista. Costruiamo su quello che è venuto prima di noi. Se non fosse così, saremmo ancora all'età della pietra, più o meno.

An artist I know enjoys to find everything that is not unique in my work. A video with a title he himself chose some years ago, a work that bears the same title another artist chose for her show... I think his mania of finding negativities in other people work is rather irritating, but on the other hand I know that anyone choosing her titles among poems risks not to be original. At least in the title.
For him, originality sems to be everything. As for myself, I really don't believe things must be new no matter what the cost. I even go as far as to say I think it doesn't exists. We build on what has been done before us. If it weren't true, we would still be in the stone age, more or less.

Dopo sei anni che lavoro su quel testo, quattro anni da che ho pensato di farci un video, e un anno di studi, sceneggiature, riprese, montaggio, ho appena finito il video più impegnativo fra quelli che ho fatto finora: Qohélet, cioè "il predicatore". Un lavoro così è la mia Cappella Sistina. Non ci ho dormito per mesi, adesso è pronto. Quattro minuti e mezzo di riflessioni visive sul testo biblico dell'Ecclesiaste, con la musica di Renato Rivolta. Dio, come spero che sia un buon lavoro!

I've been working on that text for six years, thinking about a video on it for four years, and studying, script-writing, shooting, editing it during the last year, and now it's ready. Qohelet, i.e. "the preacher", is the most exacting and researched video of mine until now. My Sixtine Chapel. I couldn't sleep for months, and now it's finished. A four minutes and a half visual meditation on the biblical text of Ecclesiastes, music by Renato Rivolta. God, how I hope it's really good work!

Come mai i giornalisti hanno risposto -mica tutti, ma più d'uno- al mio progetto BabelFood, e quasi nessuno nel mondo dell'arte? Come mai quelli dell'arte vedono un mio video sul rumore, Decibel, e dicono che ci vorranno dieci anni prima che venga capito, ma il pubblico in piazza a Verona applaudiva già un anno fa? E perché, se davvero sono così all'avanguardia, quelli che sono sempre in cerca di novità non apprezzano il mio lavoro? Bon, il faut s'y faire, dicono in Francia. Ci sono cose che non si possono cambiare, come la morte, o un temporale.

How comes some journalists responded to my BabelFood project, and almost nobody in the art world? How comes critics seeing decibel, a video of mine about noise, and say it will take ten years before it wil be understood, when last year the public in a Verona square applauded it? And why, if I'm really so avant-garde and artist, those who are always looking for the next new thing don't notice me? Bon, il faut s'y faire, as they say in France. There are things you must put up with, like death, or weather.

Ho appena messo online "BabelFood". Parla degli alimenti e dei loro viaggi: le dinamiche dei cambiamenti culturali, economici e del gusto che oggi chiamiamo globalizzazione non sono nate ieri. ?BabelFood? fa ripensare con uno sguardo diverso a tutti quegli ingredienti che non hanno sempre fatto parte della nostra alimentazione, a tutti quei cibi che arrivano da più o meno lontano. E sono proprio tutti: anche l?acqua bisognava andarla a prendere al pozzo, una volta, e il sale faceva centinaia di chilometri. Per non parlare del pomodoro che arriva dalle Americhe. troppo - too much

Troppe parole appassionate troppo vino eccellente troppo cibo buonissimo e diverso dal solito troppe persone interessanti troppo fumo troppa attenzione. Alla fine del primo convegno su Beuys, quello di Bolognano, ero stanchissima, mi ha ridato entusiasmo una festa di fuochi d'artificio mai visti, la Pupa fiammeggiante che danza sulle spalle di un uomo.

Too many passionate words too much excellent wine too much superb regional food too many interesting people too much smoke too much attention required. At the end of the first of the events honoring Beuys, the one in Bolognano, I was very tired, but the wonderful Pupa dancing with her fire on a man's shoulders gave me back my enthusiasm.

In occasione del 20° anniversario della Difesa della Natura di Joseph Beuys vado a Bolognano, dove l'artista ha lavorato per anni, a un convegno a cura di Lucrezia De Domizio Durini. Il posto è molto bello e sono convinta che si diranno cose interessanti.
Poi si passa ad Ascona, sul lago Maggiore, in Svizzera. Nel Museo comunale di arte moderna oltre alle opere di Beuys e a una serie di conferenze e di analisi del suo lavoro saranno proiettati video di artisti contemporanei, fra cui uno mio. Andremo anche sul Monte Verità, che nome bellissimo.

I'm going to Bolognano for the 20th anniversary of Beuys's "Difesa della Natura". He worked there for years, and Lucrezia De Domizio Durini is curating the event. The place is beautiful and I'm sure to be hearing interesting things.
Afterwards we go to Ascona, in Switzerland. In the Museo comunale di arte moderna there will be Beuys's works and a series of lectures.Some videos by contemporary artists will also be shown, among them one of mine. We will also go on the Monte Verità: what a beautiful name, Mount Truth.
