Abbastanza spesso qualcuno mi propone di fare un video sul suo lavoro artistico o su quello di qualcun altro, come se io facessi documentari. (Tutto sempre gratis, naturalmente.) Oppure mi dicono che dovrei fare un video su un'idea che buttano lì, e che non è neanche tanto interessante (infatti loro si guardano bene dal farne un'opera).
Chissà che idea hanno della videoarte. Non capisco io, o non capiscono loro? Chiederebbero a un pittore di dipingere le loro sculture o le loro idee, a un poeta di scrivere dei loro quadri? Molti scrittori hanno narrato pittori, ma non così, su richiesta.
Forse pensano che una videoartista non sia capace di avere idee per conto suo. Oppure semplicemente vogliono essere parte del processo creativo, la gratificazione senza il rischio né la lotta.

Quite often (twice last week) someone suggests that I make a video on her or someone else's artworks, as if I made documentaries. (Always for free of course.) Or they tell me I should make a video around an idea they just had, and which is not really good (that's why they don't even think to make a work out of it themselves).
What do they think is video art? Is it I or they who don't understand? Would they ask a painter to paint their sculptures or their ideas, a poet to write about their paintings? Many writers have written about painters, but they were not asking for it.
Maybe they think a video artist can't have ideas on her own. Or perhaps they simply want to be part of it, meaning the creative process: the gratification without the risk and the fight.
