Se devo basarmi sul mio caso, direi che un artista lavora quasi sempre o non lavora quasi mai: dipende dal punto di vista. La sola certezza è che per quanto lavori e sia apprezzata, guadagno pochissimo. E invece i soldi sono un riconoscimento importante, oltre al fatto che servono.
Dal mio punto di vista la risposta a questo problema è sforzarsi di diventare più brava. Anche se non è detto che basti. Vendere tanto non è lo stesso che essere brava.
E viceversa.
Gli artisti che non vendono non sono necessariamente altrettanti Van Gogh.

If my case is an example, I'd say an artist works most of the time, or almost never: it depends on the point of view. The only certainty is that regardless of how much I work and am appreciated, I earn very little. But money is an important appreciation mark, beside being useful.
From my point of view, the answer to this is an effort to become a better artist. Though I know it might be insufficient. Selling well is not the same as being good.
And vice-versa.
Every artist not selling is not necessarily another Van Gogh.
