Negli anni di gioventù visse per lo più a Zurigo, lavorando come impiegato presso istituti bancari e assicurazioni.
Dal 1905 al 1913 visse a Berlino, dove frequentò fra l’altro una scuola per domestici e lavorò alcuni mesi come valletto in un castello della Slesia.
Dal 1913 al 1921 visse nella mansarda di un albergo, poi si trasferì a Berna dove rimase otto anni cambiando più volte domicilio.
A cinquant’anni entrò in una clinica psichiatrica. Morì ventisette anni dopo nel corso di una solitaria passeggiata sulla neve.

In his youth he mainly lived in Zurich, working as an employee for banks and insurance companies.
Form 1905 to 1913 he lived in Berlin, where among other things he went to a school for domestic helpers and worked for a while as a valet in a Silesia castle.
From 1913 to 1921 he lived in an hotel mansard, then he went to Bern where he stayed eight years, often changing dwelling.
At fifty he entered a psychiatric clinic. He died twenty-seven years later during a solitary walk in the snow.
