I've just read Hemingway's "For Whom the Bell Tolls" in Arrow's edition and I've been surprised by the number of "obscenity" and "unprintable" that substitute what used to be called foul language. Wondering whether it was the author's choice, I had another idea of his style, I looked up an old Italian translation I have, and all the "fuck" were at their place. Maybe the 1941 English edition needed that kind of censure, though I doubt it, but to print that in 2004 seems to me rather a serious fault of the publisher.

Ho appena letto "For Whom the Bell Tolls" di Hemingway nell'edizione Arrow e mi sono meravigliata per il numero di "oscenità" e "impubblicabile" che sostituiscono le parolacce. Chiedednomi se era stata una scelta dell'autore, del quale avevo tutt'altra opinione, sono andata a vedere una vecchia traduzione italiana di "Per chi suona la campana", e tutti i "fottuto" erano al loro posto. Forse l'edizione inglese del 1941 aveva bisogno di questa censura, anche se ne dubito, ma ristamparla uguale nel 2004 mi pare un errore grave dell'editore.
