I'm studying an essay on Shakespeare and I need to read Falstaff. My English is good for a foreigner, but not enough to appreciate all the finesse of a Shakespeare text. I go and look for a translation, but the Italian publishers don 't seem to care for the greatest writer of all: one translation dares to change Hal's name into Rico, something that hasn't been done since fascism; another one is so old-fashioned and fake poetic it gets on my nerves; the third has no original text, and so on; only one is readable, but it's printed on horrible rough cheap hand-chafing paper. And yet they publish (often on better paper) and sell all sort of stupid books.

Sto studiando un saggio su Shakespeare e ho bisogno di leggere Falstaff. Il mio inglese è ottimo per uno straniero, ma non abbastanza buono per cogliere tutte le finezze di un testo di Shakespeare nell'originale. Vado a cercare uan traduzione, ma gli editori italiani non sembrano interessati all'autore più universale che c'è: una traduzione osa cambiare il nome di Hal in Rico, cosa che non veniva fatta dai tempi del fascismo; un'altra è così vecchia e falsamente poetica che mi fa venire il nervoso; la terza non ha il testo a fronte, eccetera. Solo una è leggibile, ma stampata su orribile carta ruvida e fastidiosa al tocco. Eppure pubblicano (spesso su carta migliore) e vendono ogni sorta di libri stupidi.
