Dice il libro che ho comprato e letto stamattina "definisci il tuo obiettivo". Ci provo, e mi accorgo che voglio essere "brava come Shakespeare (e Disney)". Non tanto popolare quanto (quasi) universale.
Non male, come obiettivo, però non mi pare compatibile con il mondo dell'arte contemporanea, così elitista. Questo libro suggerisce di "fallire, fallire ancora, fallire meglio", e di andare contro le regole, quindi secondo lui vado bene. Ma il libro che leggo nel pomeriggio parla dei pochi che fanno le regole, e loro sono elitisti: gli artisti di successo devono essere pochi. E poco apprezzabili dalle masse, come documentano molti altri volumi. Nonostante molti di questi artisti siano sostenuti dai musei, quindi con soldi pubblici.
Il criterio di giudizio nel mondo dell'arte è spesso Se non si capisce subito, se è scioccante, è migliore. Il collezionista che investe si vuole sentire un eletto, in grado di apprezzare quello che alle masse non piace. Il critico fa la sua parte in questo gioco. E i soldi...
Insomma io che voglio essere capita su internet non ho grandi prospettive a ArtBasel. Me ne accorgo solo adesso?

Says the book I bought and read this morning "set yourself a goal". I try, and I feel I want to be "as good as Shakespeare (and Disney)". Not as much popular as (almost) universal.
Not bad, as a goal, but it doesn't agree with the contemporary art world, so elitist. That book suggests to "fail, fail again, fail better" and to go against the rules, so by its standards I'm on the good road. But the book I read in the afternoon talks about those who make the rules, and they are elitist: successful artists must be just a few. And not really appreciated by the masses, as many other volumes prove. Although many of those artists are helped in their careers by museums, that is with public money.
The art world criterion is often If you don't understand it immediately, if it's shocking, it's better. Collectors want to feel they're among the happy few, able to appreciate what the masses can't understand. Critics do their part in that game. And money...
I want to be understood on the internet, so I probably don't have many chances in ArtBasel. Didn't I know before?
