Parlano tutti tanto male delle mamme italiane e di quelle ebree. Tolstoj critica spesso le mamme e i figli francesi dell'epoca di Napoleone Buonaparte, sempre lì a raccontare della loro vita e di "ma pauvre mère".
Alla fermata dell'autobus una mamma araba aspetta il figlio, trentacinque anni circa. Arriva, le bacia la fronte e la mano, lei lo scruta e gli scaccola un occhio e le orecchie. Lui tranquillo.
Poi vedo una ragazza francese fare lo stesso al suo compagno, in métro.
