A proposito di quelli che comprano quadri intonati al divano. Anni fa una tipa francese, abitava a New York, ha scelto un quadro sul catalogo di una mia mostra. L'ha scelto in tinta con la sua casa. Ma era così in tinta che non si vedeva: ha dovuto metterlo in un'altra stanza.

Penso alla Frick collection, con quella luce scarsa, se avesse quadri grigi su pareti grigie e cornici piombo/argento. Oppure a Pitti, se tutti i quadri fossero dello stesso rosso delle tappezzerie. Eppure quanti quadri comprati perché stanno bene con l'arredamento, il tappeto, il divano.

Speaking of those who buy paintings to go with their couch. Once a Frenchwoman living in New York asked me for a painting. She chose it in the same hue of her living room. So much so, she had to put it in another room: it was invisible.
Think of the Frick collection if it were all in grey, with lead-colored frames and gray paintings and walls, and the feeble light... Or think of Pitti, if all paintings were the same purple color of the tapestries. And yet, how many paintings are bought because they look good with the carpet, or the wallpaper.
